Quick Overview

Official name: Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca (“La Seu”).
Address: Plaça de la Seu, s/n, 07001 Palma, Mallorca, Spain.
Area: On the edge of Palma’s Old Town, overlooking the Parc de la Mar and the bay.
Nearest landmarks: Almudaina Palace, Parc de la Mar lake, Passeig Marítim (seafront).

Nearest public transport: Local EMT buses stopping by Parc de la Mar / Catedral / Plaça de la Reina. It’s also an easy walk from Plaça d’Espanya (Intermodal Station), Palma’s main bus and train hub.

Best First-Time Route

If you’re staying in central Palma, head to Plaça d’Espanya. From there you can:

  • Walk through the Old Town (about 15–20 minutes) following signs for Catedral / La Seu.
  • Or take an EMT bus towards the seafront and get off at Parc de la Mar or Catedral stop.

From the Seafront & Parc de la Mar

The cathedral sits directly above the Parc de la Mar lake. From the promenade or hop-on hop-off bus stop, follow the pedestrian paths uphill via ramps and steps to reach the main entrance in Plaça de la Seu. It’s a short but slightly uphill walk.

Option 1 — From Palma Centre & Plaça d’Espanya

Best if you’re staying near Plaça d’Espanya, the Intermodal Station, or along Avinguda d’Alemanya.

  • On foot (most popular): From Plaça d’Espanya, follow Carrer de Sant Miquel or Carrer de la Sindicat into the Old Town. Continue towards Plaça Major, then follow signs downhill to Catedral / La Seu. You’ll gradually emerge onto Plaça de la Seu with the cathedral right in front of you.
  • By city bus: EMT Palma buses towards the seafront stop around Parc de la Mar and Pl. de la Reina, a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral. Use any bus signed for the port / Maritime promenade and get off as close as possible to Parc de la Mar or the Old Town.
  • By taxi: Ask the driver for Catedral de Palma or Plaça de la Seu. Taxis can usually drop you very close to the main entrance, though some streets are restricted within the historic center.

Ticket & Time Tip

If you’re walking from Plaça d’Espanya, consider booking skip-the-line cathedral tickets in advance. That way you arrive, take photos from Parc de la Mar, and go straight to the entrance without queuing.

Option 2 — Local Buses & Hop-on Hop-off

Local EMT Buses

Palma’s EMT city buses connect beaches, neighborhoods, and the center. Routes running along the seafront and Avinguda d’Antoni Maura stop near Parc de la Mar and Catedral.

From these stops, simply follow the signs or look up—La Seu dominates the skyline and is a 5–7 minute walk uphill via ramps and stairs.

From Playa de Palma & Beach Areas

From popular beach zones like Playa de Palma / Arenal, take an EMT bus towards the city center. Many routes end near or pass by Plaça d’Espanya or the seafront, from where you can walk or connect to another bus that stops by Parc de la Mar.

Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus

Palma’s hop-on hop-off bus has a dedicated stop at or very close to the cathedral / Parc de la Mar area. It’s a convenient option if you’re sightseeing around the city and want to get off directly by La Seu.

Check the latest route map to confirm Cathedral / Parc de la Mar stop locations before your trip.

Tickets & Passes

For flexibility, combine a hop-on hop-off bus ticket with a cathedral entry ticket. You can arrive by bus, visit the cathedral and Almudaina Palace, then continue around Palma on the same day.

Booking Tip

Many Palma city passes and hop-on hop-off tickets include free cancellation up to 24 hours before, making it easy to adapt your cathedral visit if the weather changes.

Option 3 — Scenic Walks through Old Town & Seafront

Walking to the Cathedral of Mallorca is often the most beautiful option. You’ll pass stone lanes, historic courtyards, and seafront views that make the approach part of the experience.

  • Old Town Route: Start at Plaça Major and dive into the narrow streets of the historic center. Follow signs for Catedral / La Seu or head downhill towards the sea—you’ll eventually emerge onto small plazas that open up to the cathedral square.
  • Seafront Route: Walk along the Passeig Marítim or Parc de la Mar promenade, with the sea on one side and the cathedral above. Then take the ramps and steps up from the lake area to the main entrance.
  • Evening Approach: Around sunset, the cathedral is beautifully lit and reflected in the Parc de la Mar lake. It’s an ideal time for photos as you walk up from the seafront.

Footwear & Streets

Old Town streets can be cobbled and uneven. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, especially if you’re walking from Plaça d’Espanya or exploring side alleys and viewpoints on the way to the cathedral.

From Palma Cruise Port & Marina

By Shuttle or Tour Bus

Many cruise lines include shuttle buses or shore excursions that drop you near the Old Town, often by Parc de la Mar or Plaça de la Reina. From there, it’s a short walk uphill to the cathedral.

By Local Bus

From the port area, you can also use EMT buses running along the seafront into the city center. Look for buses heading towards Plaça d’Espanya / Catedral / Parc de la Mar and get off at the closest stop.

On Foot (Longer Walk)

If your ship docks at the main cruise terminal, it’s a long but scenic walk along the seafront (roughly 30–40 minutes) to the Parc de la Mar area, with the cathedral visible ahead of you.

Taxi & Rideshare

Taxis are readily available at cruise terminals. Ask for Catedral de Palma or Plaça de la Seu. The ride is usually 10–15 minutes depending on traffic.

Time-Pressed Cruise Visitors

If you only have a few hours in port, combine a city sightseeing bus or Old Town guided tour with pre-booked cathedral tickets so you don’t waste time queuing.

From Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)

Airport Bus to City Centre

The airport is connected to Palma by an express bus service. Take the airport bus towards the city and get off near Plaça d’Espanya or the seafront, then continue on foot or by local bus to the cathedral area.

Taxi or Private Transfer

Taxis and pre-booked transfers from PMI can drop you close to the Old Town. Ask for the Cathedral of Mallorca (La Seu) or your hotel if it’s nearby, then walk to the cathedral once you’ve checked in.

Car Hire

If you’ve rented a car, drive into Palma following signs for the center and the seafront. It’s usually best to park once and continue on foot—driving and parking inside the historic core can be tricky.

First-Day Strategy

On arrival day, consider a gentle evening visit to the Parc de la Mar viewpoint to see the cathedral from outside, then save your full interior visit for the following morning.

Luggage Tip

Large suitcases are not ideal inside the Old Town. If you’re going directly from the airport to the cathedral, check if your hotel or a luggage storage service can hold your bags first.

Driving, Parking & Bikes Near the Cathedral

Driving into Palma

The roads around the Old Town can be busy and narrow, with some areas reserved for residents. If you’re driving, it’s often easiest to head straight for a car park near the seafront and walk from there.

Parking Parc de la Mar

The most convenient option for the cathedral is usually the underground Parc de la Mar car park, located just below the city walls. From the car park, it’s only a few minutes on foot up to the cathedral square.

Cycling & E-scooters

Palma has cycle lanes along parts of the seafront. You can park bikes or e-scooters near Parc de la Mar, then walk up to the cathedral—riding is restricted in many Old Town streets and around the monument itself.

Accessibility

There are ramped routes from the Parc de la Mar area up towards the cathedral, but slopes can be fairly steep. If you have mobility needs, aim to be dropped as close as possible to Plaça de la Seu and allow extra time.

Practical Visit Tips

Arrive a Little Early

Plan to arrive at least 15–20 minutes before your chosen entry time to take photos outside, find the ticket office or scan your mobile ticket, and clear any security checks.

What to Wear

The Cathedral of Mallorca is an active place of worship. Dress respectfully: shoulders covered, no swimwear, and longer shorts or skirts are recommended, especially in summer.

Heat & Sun

In warmer months, the walk up from the seafront can feel hot. Carry water, wear a hat, and consider visiting in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures.

Tickets & Combos

Look for combined tickets that include the cathedral, terraces, or nearby attractions, as well as guided Old Town tours. Many offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
